The Customer is one of the largest mining companies globally with operations in North and South America, Asia, Australia and Africa. It’s widely considered to be a leader in the industry, both in terms of productivity, breadth of operations and innovation.
Customer Challenges
Despite implementing vigorous safety programmes, the Customer had been unable to eliminate fatalities from the workplace. In fact, it has suffered fatalities in every year of its operations for over 100 years. And while other safety metrics had shown improvement, deaths kept happening.

Our leading Critical Risk Management Solution (CRM+) was implemented across all of the Customer’s sites globally. The implementation of CRM+ was also the driver for substantial change management throughout the organisation, imbedding the safety methodologies and principles inherent in CRM+.
Outcomes Achieved
Zero fatalities five years in a row
CRM+ is now used by over 50,000 of its workers, approximately half of which are external contractors. In fact, it has been adopted by all at-risk workers and contractors.
Yet the truly big news is that CRM+ and the consequent change management programme has eliminated fatalities from the Customer’s sites. In fact, we’re thrilled to report they have achieved 5 consecutive years without a fatality – a remarkable achievement for a tier 1 global mining company.
In addition, in the same period, potentially fatal injuries decreased by 80% and the All Injury Frequency Rate fell by 11%.
These are incredible results that are rewarding for all of us.
How does it happen? The Customer has conducted several million critical control verifications in the field each year since the introduction of CRM+. It’s benefitted from Forwood’s patented 3-Tier Methodology, enabling managers, supervisors and operators to regularly perform critical control verifications.
CRM+ has proven to be an easy to use tool to use and achieved a high level of engagement by workers in countries across the world, regardless of culture. As a result, the Customer has incorporated many of its own Task Based Critical Controls and associated Verifications into CRM+ while other, less effective safety processes are no longer used.
